The Humans of Hofstra — November 15, 2016

Zain Farooqui I am a freshman majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Pre-Med. I’m from Texas. In Texas, the majority of people feel that being conservative is the best way to live your life, and I understand that as well, but the conservatism of today is not the same conservatism of other years. I also love to play the clarinet. I chose to play the clarinet because there is a certain ease of access that it has over other brass instruments. I’ve stuck with it for eight years now. Another thing I like to do is archery. Sadly, that’s in Texas so I don’t have it with me. I got into archery through reading about it in comic books. My favorite comic book is the newest version of Ms. Marvel because it is based on a muslim teenager, so that culture related to me since I am a Muslim. I think that superheroes have an interesting way to look at the world and they live their lives in a way that we don’t have the power too. I’m not saying that we’re powerless, but they’re on the right page. Something that most people don’t know about me is that even though I am interested in math, science, and engineering, I still enjoy learning about history.
Brandon Crofts I’m on the Quidditch team.There’s about 25 to 30 of us, so that’s pretty cool. We practice three times a week. We run around with pipes between our legs. It’s really fun and a good time. When [the Quidditch team was] tabling at the club fair, they were like, “Hey, why don’t you come down,” and I was like, “Uh, I’m good,” and they were like, “No you should,” and I was like, “Fine, I’ll go to one.” After the first [practice], I realized that it was actually pretty fun, so I just kept doing it. I’m also in Student Government. I am a senator in the Club Relations Committee. I was in SGA in my high school and we did some things, but we didn’t do a lot, so I wanted to see what it would be like to be a part of a real student governing body. We pass laws amongst the senate and also allocate funds for other clubs. We actually just had our budget weekend last weekend, so we had a lot of clubs give their proposals for the budget to be approved or denied. There’s a lot more that goes into it than you would think. I also listen to country music sometimes. My favorite group is the Zac Brown Band. My parents got me into it and I thought that it was actually pretty cool.


Max Autsch I’m really involved in Student Government on campus. I’m actually in the cabinet for SGA; I’m the Public Relations Chair. Right now, we are having our week long Student Appreciation Week. I spend a lot of time interacting with students, and even though I’m not a political science major or any of that, I’ve always tried to be super engaged with social stuff and keeping students aware of what’s going on at Hofstra. A lot of times students don’t know what’s happening, so we just want them to know that Student Government is here. I also play on the ping pong club team. I played tennis in high school and there was a ping pong table in the senior lounge. When I became a senior, I would always play against the other members of the Tennis team. I would literally play hours worth of ping pong, and after a while I got pretty good at it. So when I came to Hofstra, I joined the team. This year has been kind of rough for us because we haven’t had the space in the gym that we usually do. We’re sort of getting in the swing of things, like looking for a new coach and stuff.
