Four University students have been arrested and arraigned for stealing over $200 worth of assorted snack foods from the Rathskeller.
According to public safety, the students were observed leaving the back of the Student Center in a Mazda van shortly after 3 a.m. last Thursday by a campus officer. They were caught trying to steal a collection of potato chips, soda beverages and other snacks by the officer.
Although the students, Oronde London, 20, of New Jersey; Darren Sands, 21, of Boston; Gregory Ketant, 21, of Florida; and John Meekins III, of West Hempstead, pled guilty and offered to make restitution for the stolen goods, Lackmann food decided to press charges.
All four of the students were charged with third degree burglary, a felony and were issued appearance summonses by public safety. Meekins was also issued a warrant.
Director of Public Safety Ed Bracht said this type of burglary is rare and the students will have their case presented before a judicial panel who will determine the penalty for the students.
Cheryl Betz, assistant dean of students, said any student summoned for a violation is required to have an informational meeting with the dean of student’s office. The panel will then decide the penalty according to previous violations as well as the severity of the situation.
