The Hofstra women’s volleyball team’s winning streak was snapped Saturday, losing 3-0 in three sets to Northeastern University.
The five-game winning streak was its longest of the season, all coming against Colonial Athletic Association teams. The Pride moves to 15-6 in regular season play, while going 5-3 within its conference.
In the first set, the Pride was locked in a tight game, with each team exchanging points back and forth. The wire-to-wire game finally hit a turning point right after the Pride found itself tied up 21-21. A quick 4-1 run led by two kills from Jamie Bredahl gave the Huskies the opening set advantage.
This would continue to be an issue for the Pride as its struggled to contain Bredahl all afternoon. She ended with a team high 14 kills, to go along with a team high aces (two).
Her teammate, Caterina Rosander, also had a productive game, contributing with eight kills and a team high five blocks. Her final block was her 75th of the season, leading all other Huskie players.
In the second set, Hofstra struggled to come back from a disappointing first set loss. The Pride committed seven errors to go along with only ten kills. Northeastern pulled away after it was tied up 10-10, increasing its lead to 15-10.
From then on, the Pride did not stand much chance. Continuous errors and the non-stop attack of Bredahl and Rosander helped the Huskies cruise to a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Not much changed in the third set as Northeastern continued to pound away. The Pride did not hold a single lead throughout the entire set. The Huskies went on to win 25-17, finishing off the Pride 3-0.
In the match, the Pride trailed in every statistic except digs, where it held a 1-dig advantage.
All in all, the loss earns Northeastern to be the new top dog in the CAA. With the win the Huskies improved to 17-5 on the season and 7-1 in conference play. In addition, the win was their sixth straight, the largest such winning streak this year.
After being picked in the preseason poll as number one, Hofstra has now fallen back to fourth in the CAA standings with eight matches remaining.
Up next on the schedule against the College of William & Mary. The Tribe has been abysmal all season, going 8-13 to along with a 2-6 CAA record, good for last in the conference. The match will take place Friday, Oct. 21, in Williamsburg, Virginia.
