Lindsey Scott and Drew Shapiro combined for seven goals but it wasn’t enough as the Hofstra Pride women’s lacrosse team fell to Rutgers 18-13 on Friday night.
With the loss, the struggling Pride falls to 1-6 while the Scarlet Knights improve to 3-7.
Carolyn Carrera and Becky Conto played a big part in the draw control, as Carrera had a career-high 10 draw controls while Conto had six in the game. The Pride had a 22-12 advantage at the draw control circle.
To start the game, Hofstra was down 6-3 with about 15 minutes to go in the opening frame before mounting its comeback. The Pride knotted the game up at six with two goals from Shapiro that surrounded a Scott goal, all under two minutes following the three goal deficit.
The Scarlet Knights netted two before back-to-back goals from Lexi Lenaghan and Scott brought the game tied again. Before the half, Rutgers found the net one more time to head into the locker rooms up 9-8.
In the second half, the Pride and Scarlet Knights exchanged goals before Rutgers scored three unanswered to go up 13-9.
Hofstra scored another pair of goals from Lenaghan and Scott to close the gap to 13-11 in a strong effort to mount a comeback.
But it wasn’t enough, as Rutgers went on a 5-2 run the rest of the way to hold on to the victory.
For Hofstra, Alexis Greene let in 18 goals and had ten saves, one away from her career high. Rutgers started the game with Devon Kearns, who allowed five goals on no saves. Bianca Dente was the winning goalie, coming in 15 minutes into the game, allowing eight goals on three saves.
Eight different players for the Pride tallied at least one point on the day.
Hofstra is next in action on Easter Sunday against 18th-ranked Ohio State University at 12 p.m. at Shuart Stadium.
