University trustees and members of the community attended the Kenneth Cole Fashion show sponsored by the Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center at the Chateau Briand Tuesday evening.
The event, which raised over $2,000, was organized to aid the Saltzman Center and honor community members Robert Catell and Richard Kessel. Catell, chairman and chief executive officer of KeySpan Coorporations and Kessel, chairman and chief executive officer of Long Island Power Authority, help sustain the Saltzman Community Services Center.
The evening started with a cocktail hour and was followed by dinner and a fashion show emceed by Irv”Mr. G” Irv Gikofsky of WB11.
The fashion show featured 30 boys involved in the programs at the Saltzman Center, modeling Kenneth Cole Reaction’s Spring Looks for Boys.
The Saltzman Community Services Center plays an important role in the community as well as the University. Its services include a fully licensed early childhood program and four clinics including a Psychological Evaluation Research and Counseling Clinic, Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic, Reading and Writing Learning Clinic and a Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. Each clinic is affiliated with either the School of Education and Allied Human Services or the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The center supports high quality educational and practical experiences for University students and provides services to University employees and to the community at large.
“Some kids are really lost and it is up to us to help them discover what they can do,” said Gikofsky. “Those who have struggled all their lives can receive the speech therapy they need. We hope for many more years of community service from this great center.”
University President Stuart Rabinowitz said he is grateful for the turnout and called the center “a vital part of what Hofstra is about.”
“Tonight we are here to honor two giants in the community for their unquestionable integrity and incredible generosity,” he said.
