The No. 10 Pride women’s lacrosse team is currently on six-game win streak, its best since 2001 when a 16-3 squad took a seven-game win streak into the NCAA tournament.
One of the biggest reasons for the Pride’s success is the outstanding play of junior midfielder, Becky Thorn.
Thorn has already been Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) player of the week twice this season and is the team’s leading scorer.
Here’s what head coach Shelly Klaes-Bawcombe had to say about Thorn:
“There are so many good things to say about Becky, that it’s hard to specify. I’m really proud of her great evolution and the way she has improved on her weaknesses. This season she has been able to capitalize on her power and her composure. She’s become the total lacrosse player. I think because of her large change this year, her potential is now unlimited.”
Chronicle: So where did you go to high school?
Becky Thorn: Sachem high school in Holbrook, New York.
Chronicle: What was your first sport?
BT: I played soccer until I was 8 years old.
Chronicle: How many sports did you play in high school?
BT: In my first few years I played three sports: soccer, basketball and lacrosse. During my senior year I played soccer, lacrosse and ran track and field.
Chronicle: You played a lot of sports, but which one were you best at?
BT: I played on a club [lacrosse] team that traveled heavily across the U.S. playing in a lot of cities. I was recruited by a lot of teams on the East coast including Syracuse, Loyola and Maryland.
Chronicle: You were recruited by a lot of great programs, why did you choose Hofstra?
BT: Basically because it was close to home. I live only about 40 minutes away and I wanted my parents to be able to come to my home games.
Chronicle: You were a Long Island soccer all-star in high school, did you ever consider playing soccer at Hofstra as well?
BT: I thought about it, but coach said it was out of the question. The risk of injury was too high.
Chronicle: What has been the best game of your career so far?
BT: As of right now it has to be a game from this season. When we beat Loyola 9-8 this season, I felt personally I was playing with a lot of heart. I think I really performed well.
Chronicle: What are your plans after college?
BT: I took a city police test and I’m waiting for the results on that. If not then I would like to pursue something in physical education.
Chronicle: Wow. Well did you ever consider trying out for the U.S. Olympic lacrosse team?
BT: I thought about it but when the time came, I backed down. I still may do it in the future.
Chronicle: What’s your prediction for the team this season?
BT: I don’t want to look ahead and jinx the team but I would hope that we could make the CAA tournament and even host it. Of course our goal is to win the entire thing.
