Hallie Berry, known for her amazing 2002 performance in Monster’s Ball spent last Saturday evening reveling in her acting career’s low-point.
Berry won the 2004 Razzie for worst actress in Catwoman, the fiasco of a film she starred in. Berry fought off other atrocious efforts such as Hilary Duff’s Cinderella Story and Raise Your Voice and the Olsen twins’ New York Minute to secure the terrible award.
When the award was revealed, she stood up and was in shock.
“Omigosh, oh my God. I never in my life thought that I would be here, winning a Razzie. It’s not like I ever aspired to be here, but thank you,” Berry said as she stood up on the platform while holding her 2002 Oscar for Monster’s Ball in one hand and her new Razzie in the other.
Berry then rationalized on-stage why she appeared at the awards show.
“When I was a kid, my mother told me that if you could not be a good loser, then there’s no way you could be a good winner,” Berry said.
Berry was the first award “winner” to claim her prize since Tom Green in 2001 for his inexcusable performance in Freddy Got Fingered.
The Razzies, led by founder and Californian John Wilson, mock the “other” prestigious awards events, while showcasing the travesties in film that transpired during the previous year.
The trashing of Catwoman did not end with Berry’s award. Catwoman also “won” worst picture and Pitof won worst director for the Cat-astrophe. Despite the three victories, Catwoman was out-won by another film.
The silver anniversary of the Razzies also gave out awards to President Bush for worst actor and Donald Rumsfeld for worst supporting-actor because of their cameos in Farenheit 9/11. Rumsfeld and the President were not at the ceremony to claim their awards at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood.
Michael Moore’s partisan documentary Farenheit 9/11 earned another Razzie when Britney Spears was picked for worst supporting-actress. According to CNN website, Spears is seen chewing her gum and saying, “I think we should just trust [the president].”
Farenheit 9/11 received its fourth Razzie for the worst screen couple category. The award went to President Bush and “either Condoleezza Rice or his pet goat,” according to razzies.com. The win sealed a second award for President Bush, but he was still unable to receive his second award in person.
The cruelty of Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed got the award for worst remake or sequel to sum up the awards for 2004.
The silver anniversary of the Razzie also gave awards for the worst in film during its first 25 years.
The award for “Worst Razzie Loser of Our First 25 Years” went to the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, for his collective efforts over several bad films. Schwarzenegger earned eight nominations during the Razzies’ existence, including one for 2004’s disaster Around The World in 80 Daze.
The “Worst Musical of Our First 25 Years” went to 2003’s ignominy From Justin to Kelly. The “Worst Comedy of Our First 25 Years” went to 2003’s disaster Gigli starring Ben Affleck (a.k.a. Bennifer) and Jennifer Lopez. The “Worst Drama of Our First 25 Years” was given to Battlefield Earth, the 2000 spectacle of what not to do in a multi-million dollar film.
