As of 4:30 p.m. the University will be closed, the University’s Web site announced Monday afternoon.
The University has closed operations due to a snowstorm that has been developing throughout the afternoon on much of Long Island and in New York City.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Statement for much of Long Island and a Flood Watch for costal regions.
The storm is expected to bring up to 5-9 inches of snow by midnight Monday and taper off into the morning. It is possible that the snow will turn into sleet or rain by Monday evening.
Winds will be up to 20 -30 mph, increasing to 35 mph late Monday afternoon, leading to a rough ride home for the night’s commute.
According to the National Weather Service, by 5:00 p.m. the snow will be falling at a rate of 2-3 inches per hour, causing very dangerous conditions on the road.
There is a 70 percent chance that snow will continue on Tuesday adding a light amount of accumulation.
The storm progressed up the east coast through Sunday night and arrived on Long Island around 2:00 p.m. Monday. Current radar shows the tip of the storm over New York City.
As of 4:00 p.m. the temperature is 31 degrees.
