Coaches Join Fight
In alliance with the American Cancer Society, every NCAA basketball coach in games Saturday wore sneakers with their suits on behalf of the National Association of Basketball Coaches to raise money and awareness for cancer research. For Drexel’s Bruiser Flint, the tribute has special meaning. Last year, his father died of cancer. It is a loss and a sickness that his family knows all too well.
“I’ve had to deal with the pain of that first hand,” Flint said. “I know what it feels like to lose someone you love to the disease. So for us to be able to do something to help awareness and raise money to help find a cure is something that means a lot to me and my family.”
Cardozo’s Rising Star
Vic Morris scored 28 points for Cardozo (Queens) last Friday to become its all-time leading scorer with 1,677 points. Morris, who committed to the Pride last summer, told the New York Post that the accomplishment is simply a product of his being on the varsity squad longer than most players who came before him. Morris and his team beat Van Buren in the first round of the Queens Borough championship 88-81.
Home Away from Home
Whenever the Pride visits Drexel, about 20-25 members of Gibran Washington’s family comes to support him and the team. “The only problem,” Connie Washington, Gibran’s aunt, said, “is that every time they come to Philly they lose. We’ve seen him play games where they’ve won, but they always have a tough time here for some reason.” The Pride is 0-4 all-time when visiting the Dragons.
Goss on Stokes: ‘He’s the future’
Loren Stokes’ streak of consecutive games scoring in double figures ended last Wednesday against Virginia Commonwealth, but opponents’ special efforts to stop the Pride’s best ball-handler have not.
“If you let him get free, he can kill you,” said Drexel’s Phil Goss. “We just wanted to sit on his right hand and let him go to his left. He’s a great player, and only a sophomore. I think he’s really the future of our league. He can only get better.”
