The Pride men’s soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament with a 2-1 defeat over No. 21 Seton Hall on Saturday in South Orange, NJ.
In its sixth straight victory, the Pride (12-9-1) beat the Pirates (12-7-3) in typical fashion, a gritty and hard fought late game victory. Junior forward Michael Todd, the teams leading scorer, netted the game winner with some trickery and excellent handling skills. Todd dribbled and lost possession of the ball, but regained control and took a low shot, which just squeaked by the Pirate goalie.
Senior midfielder Michael Hermann scored his first goal of the season at 17:17 of the first half.
The Pride will face the University of Maryland on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The teams faced each other in 1996, a 4-0 win for the Terrapins, and again in 1997, a 3-0 win for the Terrapins. The Pride earned its first win against an ACC opponent this season with a Clemson Tournament clinching victory over the host Tigers, 3-0.
