In a stunning double overtime victory, the Pride women’s lacrosse team pulled off a 14-13 upset of No. 10 Vanderbilt Saturday at James M. Shuart stadium.
With little time to celebrate, the ladies traveled to Philadelphia Tuesday and beat conference opponent Drexel, 15-12.
Junior Tara Buecker scored the game-winning goal Saturday as Vanderbilt overcame a 7-4 halftime deficit to tie the game at 12 with 1:09 remaining.
The Lady Commodores gave the Pride all they could handle behind Tewaaraton Trophy nominee Michelle Allen’s six goals.
The Tewaaraton Trophy is given yearly to the Division I Women’s Lacrosse Player of the year.
With no rest for the weary, the Pride took on Drexel University on Tuesday. After soaring out to a 13-5 lead, the Pride was able to survive a 7-2 run by Drexel.
The Lady Dragons simply ran out of time, and was outlasted by strong performances from Tara Buecker, Kim Hillier, and sophomore standout Becky Thorn.
For a second time this year, freshman sensation Kim Hillier was the CAA Rookie of the Week.
Hillier had a game-high six points in last Saturday’s win against Vanderbilt.
She also scored three goals against Drexel, the last of which sparked a 5-0 Pride run to start the second-half.
Tara Buecker also received national attention this week, and was named to the Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week Honorable Mention list.
The Pride hope to end its season with a three-game winning streak Saturday as it will host ACC power Duke University.
After the Pride’s thrilling win over No. 10 Vanderbilt and Drexel, the team is attempting to salvage something from a season that has been less than memorable.
The game is scheduled for an 11 am start, at James M. Shuart Stadium.
