George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor are only a few of many Black people who have been unarmed and wrongfully killed this year simply because of the color of their skin. The past few weeks have brought about devastating news and reignited a much-needed conversation about oppression, racism and police brutality.
We issue this statement as one of solidarity with the Black community, which continues to face wrongful oppression, police brutality and attacks on basic human rights. There is no institution, no policy, no system that hasn’t been touched by racism. Hofstra University is no different.
Silence is deafening. We encourage our readers to be vocal by sharing and submitting their perspectives. Now more than ever, our platform needs to amplify Black voices without speaking over them.
The Hofstra Chronicle vows to continue to support and uplift Black people and all minority groups by helping to tell their stories to make an impact in this larger conversation.
We have a responsibility as human beings to protect one another and combat racism and injustice in our country. It is important that all of us continue to educate ourselves about the situation and the ways that we can take meaningful action.
As journalists, we use our voices to share stories and to tell the truth. We urge you to find your voice and do the same.
