Six months after debuting her first Christmas album, Carrie Underwood debuted her first gospel album, titled “My Savior,” on March 26. The album marks her eighth studio album and ninth album in her career.
Underwood has often incorporated elements of faith in previous works, notably in her first single, “Jesus, Take the Wheel.” “My Savior” brings grace to the audience throughout all 13 tracks, featuring Underwood’s favorite hymns.
The album opens with an instrumental “Jesus Loves Me,” setting the calm tone of the album before Underwood’s vocals open in the following track “Nothing But The Blood of Jesus.” Underwood’s calm but powerful vocals gracefully flow through each track with renditions of “Blessed Assurance” and “Just as I Am.”
Underwood, together with CeCe Winans, delivers a stunning rendition of “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.” The strong vocal performance sets the tone for several big vocal arrangements to follow including a break-taking cover of “How Great Thou Art.” The inspirational sound of Underwood continues through the final tracks “Softly and Tenderly” and the album ends with Underwood’s favorite hymn, “Amazing Grace.”
Underwood’s soft and calm approach helps convey her faith through each hymn. The album highlights Underwood’s powerful vocals, going without the massive arrangements that were common in her previous albums.
Since the release of the album, Underwood has held a virtual concert on Easter Sunday where she performed all 13 songs live from Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. The concert raised over $100,000 for the non-profit organization Save the Children.
Overall, “My Savior” is a masterful arrangement of faith-inspired hymns mixed with Underwood’s shining vocals. As fans continue to wait for the announcement of Underwood’s next country album, “My Savior” shines a light and renews faith during these difficult times.
