The Hofstra Pride men’s soccer team’s seven-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday, Oct. 9, as they played to a 1-1 draw with the College of Charleston Cougars at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. A last-minute goal in the second half for the Cougars sent the game to overtime where neither team was able to put a ball in the net.
This draw was the first of the season for Hofstra, moving their record to 10-1-1 overall, with a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) record of 3-1-1. Charleston is now 3-5-3 overall, with a CAA record of 0-4-1. Hofstra now has an overall record of 4-1-3 in the all-time series with Charleston.
Despite the winning streak coming to an end, Hofstra still has an unbeaten streak, having not lost in their last eight games, with a record of 7-0-1 in that span. Their last loss came against Northeastern University, where the Pride lost 2-1 on Saturday, Sept. 11, in Boston, Massachusetts.
After a scoreless first half saw Hofstra take ten shots, with two shots on goal and ten corner kick attempts, Ryan Carmichael scored his team-leading tenth goal of the season at the 50:21 mark. The Northern Irishman is playing with his hair on fire, having scored eight goals in the last five matches. Carmichael scored after converting a pass from Matthew Vowinkel, sending a shot into the lower left corner of the net. This assist was Vowinkel’s fifth of the season, as well as his fourth in as many games.
The Pride was one minute, plus stoppage time, away from their eighth straight win, but that possibility went away when Liam Hudock scored with 40 seconds left in regulation. The goal came at the 89:20 mark and leveled the game for the Cougars.
Hofstra had a season-high 20 shots compared to Charleston’s 13, and also had a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Pride set a season high for corner kicks in a game with 18.
The Pride gets some time to rest before their next match. They return home to host the Highlanders of the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday, Oct. 16. The game begins at 7 p.m. at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
