Game two of the Hofstra men’s soccer season took the Pride to Stony Brook for a Long Island Rivalry Game on Monday, Aug. 30. The Pride defeated the Stony Brook University Seawolves 1-0 at Kenneth P. LaVelle Stadium in Stony Brook, New York.
With this victory, Hofstra improved to 2-0 on the season, while Stony Brook lost their first game of the season. Hofstra is now 18-11-6 against Stony Brook all-time. The Pride has also won two straight matches against the Seawolves, having won the last contest between the two at Hofstra Soccer Stadium 4-1 on Feb. 28, 2021.
Hofstra took 10 shots compared to Stony Brook’s nine, and the Pride also had seven opportunities from the corner, while Stony Brook had only two.
The lone goal came from junior Stefan Mason in the 39th minute. The British national scored on a penalty kick awarded to the Pride thanks to Jason Ramirez getting tackled from behind in the box. This was the first goal of the season for Mason and only his second as a member of the Pride.
The Hofstra defense was able to help goalkeeper Wessel Speel keep a shutout and the blank slate for the Pride’s new campaign. While Stony Brook had six of their nine shots in the second half, they could only put one of them on goal in those 45 minutes.
Hofstra has been a tough team to score on since last season, as they have not given up a single goal in their last 298 minutes and 13 seconds of play. The last goal scored against the Pride was at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship semifinals on April 15, 2021, when Hofstra beat UNC -Wilmington 4-2 in Newark, Delaware.
The Pride will now get a brief period of rest, as their next match will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 8, against the Sharks of Long Island University. The match will start at 4 p.m. in Brookville, New York.
