A second half run for the Drexel University Dragons was enough as they defeated the Hofstra women’s lacrosse team, 15-11, at Vidas Field on Sunday, April 18.
The Pride came into Sunday’s game looking to keep the momentum going after they beat nationally-ranked James Madison University a week prior. The team was looking to gain their first win in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) against Drexel.
Lucy Schneidereith got the scoring started for the Dragons giving them a quick one-goal lead, but she was answered a little over a minute later when Arianna Esposito brought the Pride even with Drexel.
Schneidereith added a second goal, once again giving Drexel a one-goal advantage.
Alyssa Parrella chipped in her first goal of the game, assisted by Katie Whelan. Shortly after, Whelan helped the Pride take the lead with another assist on Jackie Gatti’s first goal of the afternoon.
After a timeout, Karson Harris brought the Dragons closer with her first goal tying the game, 3-3.
The Pride gained a slight bit of breathing room after Esposito scored on a free position shot and Parrella tallied her second goal of the afternoon giving the Pride a two-goal advantage.
After a foul on the Pride and a free position shot attempt for Harris, Colleen Grady brought Drexel back to within a goal. After a foul on Hofstra a little over two minutes later, Hayleigh Simpson tied the game on a free position shot for the Dragons.
Alyssa Parrella controlled the following faceoff draw and, after a foul on Drexel’s Courtney Dietzel, Parrella was able to find the back of the net, giving the Pride the advantage. Whelan followed her lead moments later as she contributed her first goal of the contest and Hofstra was up 7-5 heading into the half.
The Dragons opened the second half on a five-goal run, giving them a three-goal lead. Despite Alexa Mattera finding the back of the net on a free position shot, Jamie Schneidereith, Cara Moreau and Harris led Drexel on a three-goal run, giving their team a 14-8 lead.
Hofstra was able to win the following draw control and, after a foul against Drexel, Camryn Faith scored on a man-up goal, bringing the Pride deficit to five with 10:47 remaining.
Moments later, after a penalty on the Pride, Jamie Schneidereith increased the Dragons lead back to six with her second goal of the game.
Despite Parrella adding two more goals for Hofstra, it wasn’t enough and the Dragons defeated the Pride, 15-11.
Jess Smith took the loss for the Pride despite having 10 saves in her book. Shannon Boyle led the Pride in ground balls with five. Parrella led the Pride with five goals, while Whelan led with three assists.
The Pride travels to Towson University Sunday, April 25, to take on the Tigers. Face-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
