Needing overtime to do it, the Hofstra men’s soccer team came away with a win in Boston on Saturday, April 10. The Pride defeated the Northeastern University Huskies 4-3 at Parsons Field.
Senior Storm Strongin scored the winning goal in the 98th minute of the match to give the Pride the win. With this being the final match of the regular season, Hofstra finished with a record of 4-2-2 (a 2-0-2 conference mark), while Northeastern finished the season 0-5-1. Hofstra is now 11-14-3 all-time against the Huskies with this win.
It didn’t take long for scoring to begin, as Hofstra capitalized early thanks to freshman defenseman Ryan Carmichael scoring in the third minute of the match. It was the Ireland native’s fourth goal of the season.
Northeastern struck right back, scoring two goals in a four-minute span, the first coming from freshman Eren Senyuva in the seventh minute, and the second coming from junior Ryan Massoud in the 10th minute.
Northeastern held onto this lead until the 41st minute, when Hofstra leveled the score courtesy of Hendrik Hebbeker, who scored his first goal of the season. The Huskies pounced on the Pride again in the 44th minute, thanks to a goal by Stach Jaran.
The Huskies led the game 3-2 until the 73rd minute when Pride star forward Matthew Vowinkel scored his fifth goal of the season off of a corner kick from Jason Ramirez, tying the game 3-3. This would be Vowinkel’s 28th career goal for Hofstra.
The score remained tied, meaning the game had to go to overtime. In the first period of overtime, Strongin lined up for a corner kick in the eigth minute. He took the corner, curling it so much so that it found the back of the net, going past the overstretched arm of Northeastern goalkeeper Owen Kempton.
Hebbeker had an assist and a goal, while Ramirez and Jack Nuttall both had assists for the Pride.
One important stat to note is that Hofstra dominated the shot differentials in this match, outshooting Northeastern 24-6. Even though the Huskies only had six shots total, they still scored thrice. Out of Hofstra’s 24 shots, 15 were on goal.
With the win, Hofstra will be heading to the CAA semifinals, where they will face the Seahawks of UNC-Wilmington in Philadelphia. Game date and time are yet to be determined.
