The Hofstra men’s soccer team played to a 2-2 draw in two overtimes against Northeastern University on Sunday, March 21 as they continued Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play in Boston, MA.
Hofstra led twice in the game, 1-0 and 2-1, but Northeastern rallied back each time and sent the two teams to overtime after tying the score in the 84th minute. Both the Pride and Huskies tallied two shots in the two overtime periods but failed to score. Hofstra’s record went to 3-2-1 with the draw.
The Pride put pressure on the Huskies early on in the match and sent five shots toward the goal. It wasn’t until the sixth shot, fired from the foot of freshman Roc Carles, that beat Northeastern goalkeeper Colby Hegarty and put the Pride on the board first.
Stefan Mason and Matthew Vowinkel each recorded assists on the play as the Pride went ahead 1-0, but Northeastern evened up the score 10 minutes later.
Following a handball violation committed by Hofstra late in the first period, Huskies forward Timothy Ennin sent a penalty shot to the left side of the goal as Hofstra goalkeeper Wessel Speel dove to the right. The score was 1-1 going into the break.
Hofstra regained the lead at 75:44 after Ryan Carmichael took a pass from George O’Malley and sent a shot past a diving Hegarty. With the score at 2-1 now, Hofstra had another golden scoring opportunity a few minutes later but failed to capitalize.
Vowinkel was sent to the penalty mark at 79:12 with a chance to make it a 3-1 score. However, his penalty shot missed the goal and Hofstra remained in front by only one.
Hofstra’s missed opportunity came back to hurt them as Northeastern evened the score again four minutes later. Dan Munch’s first goal of the season, assisted by Federico Tellez, made the score 2-2 and sent the game to overtime.
After holding the Pride to zero shots in the first overtime period, Northeastern’s defense came up clutch in the second-to-last minute of the second overtime to preserve the tie score.
At 108:37, Storm Strongin fired a shot that was blocked by a Huskies defender, and Hegarty made one final save on a Stefan Mason shot at 108:45 as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
Hofstra currently sits in second place in the CAA North Division while the winless Huskies remain in last with an 0-3-1 conference record.
The Pride will return home to the Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Friday, March 26 to continue CAA play against the first place University of Delaware Blue Hens at 5 p.m.
