A strong nine-goal run by the Hofstra Pride men’s lacrosse team helped push them over the Sacred Heart University Pioneers 13-6 on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Campus Field.
The Pride went to Fairfield, Connecticut looking to get their first win of the season after a tough loss to the St. John’s University Red Storm last week.
The first half was a back and forth affair as the Pride traded goals with the Pioneers to start the game.
Pride attackman Justin Sykes got the scoring started with his first goal of the season with Riley Forte and Justin Lynskey finding the back of the net as Hofstra was tied at three to end the first quarter with the Pioneers.
Ryan Tierney, coming off an 11-point performance and the title of Baltimore Sun National Lacrosse Player of the Week, added a goal to give the Pride a one-goal lead in the second quarter. Ultimately, goals by Sacred Heart’s Alex Weiss and Drew Edwards pushed the Pioneers to a one-goal lead.
Coming out of the half, Jaden Walcot gave Sacred Heart a 6-4 lead until Hofstra’s Alex Concannon went on his own individual run.
Three straight goals to end the third quarter by the graduate transfer brought the Pride’s goal total up to seven as Hofstra had momentum heading into the fourth quarter.
Concannon added another goal for the Pride at the beginning of the final quarter with his fourth of the day. The scoring was spreading around as James Philbin added his first goal of the season with Concannon chipping in with his fifth goal shortly after.
Hofstra kept rolling as Lynskey and Sterlyn Ardrey piled onto the scoring barrage. The game was pretty much sealed even when Philbin chipped in on his second goal of the day as the Pride defeated the Pioneers 13-6.
Mac Gates got the win for the Pride as he added 11 saves on the day.
Brian Herber went 19-23 from the faceoff circle while scooping seven ground balls.
Hofstra’s Michael Altmann had his second game where he added two assists, with Lynskey adding two of his own.
Drew Edwards, Logan Liljeberg and Trevor Johnson each accounted for two points for the Pioneer.
The Pride led in shots with 44 to the Pioneers’ 32 while they also led in ground balls with 30 to Sacred Heart’s 19.
The Pride will be looking ahead to Saturday, Feb. 27 for a battle of Long Island against Stony Brook University. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
