The Hofstra women’s basketball team dropped their second straight game to the University of Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens by a score of 65-46 on Sunday, Jan. 17 at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
The Pride is now on a three-game losing streak with a record of 2-4 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.
Delaware had a strong performance in the first game of the series on Saturday, Jan 16 with Jasmine Dickey leading the way with a career-high 37 points. Hofstra’s JaKayla Brown and Jaylen Hines put up 19 and 15 points respectively, but it wasn’t enough as the Blue Hens picked up the victory by a 21-point margin.
Sunday saw more of the same from the Blue Hens as they got out to an early 13-3 lead. The first media timeout paved the way for Hofstra to fight back in the final minutes of the quarter. A 3-pointer from Brown as time expired cut the lead down to 7 as Delaware led 20-13.
Poor offensive play from both teams was the story of the second quarter. A combined 18 points were scored, with Delaware scoring 11 of those points. Hofstra ended the quarter on a high-note, though, as Vanerlie Valcourt knocked down her first career three-pointer at the buzzer. Delaware led 31-20 heading into the locker room.
The deficit started to dwindle in the third quarter, a common pattern for the Pride this season in games where they’ve entered the second half down. Hines got the scoring started and it was all Brown from there. With 11 points in the quarter, she finished the afternoon with a career-high 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting. The Pride cut the lead to just three points, making it a 33-30 game, but the Blue Hens would not go away easily. After giving up a 10-2 run to start the quarter, Delaware bounced back and ended the quarter on a 13-3 run.
Delaware ran away with the game in the fourth quarter. Dickey finished with a team-high 18 points, along with 8 rebounds. Tyi Skinner had 12 points, with 9 coming from beyond the arc. This is the Blue Hens’ sixth consecutive win, and they are now 6-0 in CAA play.
The Pride’s next challenge lies in Maryland when they travel down to face the Towson University Tigers in a back-to-back series. The first game is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23.
