NEWARK, DE — The Hofstra women’s soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games by defeating the University of Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens, 3-2, on Sunday, Oct. 13, at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Hofstra junior Sabrina Bryan started the attack early in the contest by scoring the game’s first goal in just the ninth minute of play off a pass from junior Lucy Shepherd. Delaware tied the game up just 10 minutes later and then played stellar defense, limiting the Pride to no shots for the rest of the half to head into the break tied, 1-1.
Jillian Vassallo made her presence in the game felt by scoring 10 minutes into the start of the second half to give Delaware the lead, 2-1. Shepherd then netted a goal to make the score 2-2 in an intense back and forth matchup that would not see another goal scored until the 88th minute of play. Then, on cue, sophomore Miri Taylor sent in her fourth game-winning goal of the season by sending a shot through the legs of a Delaware defender toward the left corner of the goal.
Freshman Skylar Kuzmich made two saves in goal for Hofstra while Delaware had none. Hofstra tallied nine total shots, keeping up with the Blue Hens’ 10.
Bryan and Taylor each scored their sixth goals of the season for the Pride. Hofstra continues to dominate Delaware in their matchups leading the all-time series 21-7-1, and this game secured the Pride’s first comeback win of the season. Hofstra is 6-0 in games where Taylor has scored a goal so far this season.
Hofstra now sits at 11-3-1 and 5-0-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), while the Blue Hens drop to 9-5 and are now 4-1 in the CAA.
