MT. PLEASANT, SC — On Sunday, Oct. 6, the Hofstra women’s soccer team traveled to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina to take on the College of Charleston Cougars. The Pride picked up their ninth win of the season and stayed undefeated in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play, dominating on both offense and defense as they shut out the Cougars by a score of 3-0.

For the Pride, Lucy Porter controlled the game from start to finish. She opened up the scoring by converting on a penalty kick at the 8:59 mark of the first half and gave Miri Taylor a beautiful cross while assisting on Taylor’s goal with 42:56 to go in the first half. Porter continued to excel throughout the match, totaling four shots in her 88 minutes of play. Her opening score added to her league-leading 11 goals.

Junior forward Lucy Shepherd scored the final goal for the Pride just over two minutes into the second half, coming off an assist by Sabrina Bryan that gave the ball to a perfectly positioned Shepherd in the box. This is Shepherd’s second goal in as many games.

Freshman goalkeeper Skylar Kuzmich stopped all four shots she faced and completed her third shutout of the season. Kuzmich’s four-save day ties for the second-most saves she has recorded in her young career.

For the Cougars, goalie Meredith Holton made only one save out of the four shots that she faced.

The Pride outshot the Cougars 20-6, but the teams had the same number of shots on goal, with four each. The difference came in the play from the keepers, as the Pride had four saves to the Cougars’ lone stop.

The Pride were more disciplined than the Cougars, committing only five fouls while the Cougars committed eight, including one that ended up being costly – as it led to Porter’s opening score. Hofstra also happened to be the recipients of three corner kicks, while the Cougars only had one.

With the win, the Pride stands at 9-3-1 on the season and has moved to 3-0-1 in CAA play. Meanwhile, the Cougars drop to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in CAA play.

The Hofstra Pride plays next on Thursday, Oct. 10, when they host James Madison University.
