On Wednesday, April 17, the Hofstra softball team suffered a non-conference loss to the Fordham University Rams by a score of 16-2. The margin of defeat, 14, tied their largest of the season.
The two teams, who had identical season records of 18-20 heading into the contest, seemed evenly matched through the first inning and a half of play. The Rams opened the match with the first of their five earned runs in the game, as Molly Roark’s single brought home Chelsea Skrepenak. The early advantage for Fordham was lost in the top of the second inning when a double from Meghan Giordano gave her two RBIs, allowing Imani Myint and Jaycee Ruberti to score.
The game began to fall apart for the Pride in the bottom of the second inning. After a fielding error allowed Maria Trivelpiece to reach second base, the floodgates were opened and Fordham began pouring on runs with ease. All nine players in the lineup for the Rams went to bat twice in the second inning alone, and all but three who saw the plate finished the game with a run. Fordham finished the frame with a staggering 12 runs scored, bringing the score to 13-2.
Mackenzie Suto took most of the damage for Hofstra, pitching two innings in which she allowed eight hits and 13 runs. Only two of those runs were earned.
After a hitless top of the third for the Pride, Trivelpiece earned her third run for the Rams, bringing their lead to 12. The fourth inning went similarly, with the Pride once again only able to get on base with a walk followed by two more runs for Fordham in the bottom of the frame. Hofstra’s offense couldn’t regain their composure in the top of the fifth either and the game came to a close with a final score of 16-2.
Giordano had the best performance by the Pride, tallying two hits and two RBIs. The loss brings Hofstra’s season record to 18-21 in their final game of the season before Colonial Athletic Association matchups begin. They head into the weekend hoping to bounce back in their series against Towson University.
