On Sunday, Oct. 14, the Hofstra women’s soccer team clinched a crucial win on the road against the Elon Phoenix by a final score of 4-3.
The Pride were led on offense by their two most prominent scorers of the season in Lucy Porter and Sabrina Bryan. The tandem finished the match on Sunday with two goals apiece, taking six and three shots respectively.
The visiting Pride came out of the gates swinging, as Bryan scored her first goal of the day less than a minute into the action. The goal, her seventh of the season, came off an assist from Jenn Buoncore, setting the tone early for the first half.
Not to be outdone, Hofstra star Lucy Porter matched her teammate’s season total with her seventh goal coming just 14 minutes later to put the Pride up 2-0. Bryan picked up the assist on the goal.
Down 2-1, the Elon Phoenix entered the second half with a newfound sense of urgency, scoring two goals in the first four minutes of play to take a quick 3-2 lead. However, their defense couldn’t withstand the Pride’s onslaught, as Bryan and Porter brought their respective scoring totals for the season up to eight, regaining the lead with goals in the 63rd and 68th minutes.
Their excellent defense helped the Pride maintain this 4-3 lead for the duration of the game to secure the victory.
Hofstra finished the game having taken 20 shots to Elon’s 14, with 10 and four shots on goal, respectively.
Pride goalkeeper Jenna Borresen only needed to make one save in the victory, while Hofstra’s aggressive offense forced Elon’s keepers, Valentina Estrada and Katelyn Fowler, to combine for six saves.
With their second win in a row, Hofstra is now 11-5-1 for the season and 5-2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.
The Pride will conclude their season with a home game on Sunday, Oct. 21, where they will celebrate senior day and take on the College of Charleston Cougars. After that, they look ahead to the CAA playoffs, which will begin with the quarterfinals on Friday, Oct. 26.
