On an overcast and gloomy Wednesday afternoon, Hofstra field hockey fell to Fairfield University 1-0 at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. The loss was Hofstra’s sixth in a row.
The teams were scoreless throughout the first half until Fairfield scored the game’s first and only goal with a low corner shot that was just out of reach for the Pride’s star freshman goalie, Betty Bosma. The goal came with only 30 seconds left in the first half.
The Pride (1-6) fought valiantly throughout the second half by putting constant pressure on the Fairfield (6-1) defense. Still, the Pride were unable to equalize.
Bosma was a rock for the team in the net and helped the defense throughout the game by stopping nine of 10 shots, adding to her Colonial Athletic Association-leading 63 saves on the season.
“[Bosma] did a great job today and she is working better and better with the defensive line,” said Hofstra head coach Kathy De Angelis.
As for the Hofstra offense, the Pride have only been able to manage .67 goals per game this season, and the offensive cold streak continued on Wednesday. The team could only muster four shots the entire game, with one shot in the first half and three in the second.
Hofstra was outshot 18-4. Fairfield also had more shots on net – 11 compared to Hofstra’s one.
“[We] came out firing and it was unfortunate the team gave up a goal in the final 30 seconds … and lost energy in the second half,” De Angelis said.
However, De Angelis acknowledged that keeping a potent Fairfield offense to only one goal was a huge accomplishment for the Pride.
Hofstra looks to turn things around and buck their losing streak on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Columbia University. That game is set to begin at noon.
