The Hofstra women’s soccer team added another victory to their young season with an exhilarating 2-1 double overtime win over Boston University on Thursday, August 23 at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
With the Pride down 1-0 with only 20 seconds remaining in regulation, senior Madeline Anderson headed in the game-tying goal off a corner kick to force overtime.
“From then on, you could feel the energy sinking out of [Boston University],” said Hofstra head coach Simon Riddiough of Anderson’s game-tying goal.
Sophomore Lucy Porter scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime off a header from senior Jenn Buoncore.
“We knew we had momentum … I thought we dominated the two overtimes,” Riddiough said.
Dominant doesn’t do the Pride justice in the overtime periods. Hofstra outshot the Terriers 7-1 in the two overtime periods and had five corner kick opportunities, one of which led to the game-winner.
The Pride clearly had the momentum in the overtime periods, but Hofstra was not so dominant for the entire game. The Terriers outshot the Pride 5-2 in the first half and, in the 64th minute, took a 1-0 lead.
Riddiough knew this game was going to come down to defense.
“I figured whoever scored the first goal would take it to the end,” Riddiough said. “At 1-0 I said, ‘Okay, let’s see what we got.’”
Defense and goalkeeping were key for both teams as there was only one goal scored in the first 89 minutes of play.
Riddiough continued his strategy of playing two goalies, one in the first half and the other in the second half. Senior Jenna Borresen was in net to start the game and shutout the Terriers in the first half.
Despite Borresen’s shutout in the first half, Riddiough sent out senior Ashley Wilson for the second half.
“If it’s not broken don’t fix it,” Riddiough said. “I don’t see any reason to change it as of yet.”
Riddiough said the team feels comfortable with the two-goalie system and he plans to stick with that system for the future but, “… that could change quickly.”
The Pride will now embark on a five-game road trip beginning at Fordham on Thursday, August 30. That game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
