By Ed Morrone
In this business, you try to separate the line between being a journalist and being a fan. However, after last Sunday, the number 62 will never be the same for me. I hate you, Matt Bryant. Still though, it seems as though these things only happen to the Eagles. They stand at 4-3 through seven weeks, but let’s examine the losses: the meltdown against the Giants in Week 2 and last second field goal losses the previous two weeks. Sixty-two yards for crying out loud! When did Matt Bryant become Jason Elam or Tom Dempsey? Oh well, it could be worse, my team’s quarterback could be Tony Romo. With that being said, here are five things I learned from Week 7:
1) Getting back to the Cowboys a little bit more…there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing Terrell Owens flounder. Now I know it might seem like I’m being hypocritical because I was the guy’s biggest fan during his first year in Philly, but he gets what he deserves. Still though, he’s not even the biggest problem in Dallas. Of course, his bickering doesn’t help, but he hasn’t cried too much about not getting the ball. The Drew Bledsoe era was an astronomical failure, and Bill Parcells needs to hang it up for good after this season. Remember when the experts picked them to be a Super Bowl contender? Eight wins if they’re lucky.
2) New York needs to settle down about all this Jets playoff talk. I’ll be the first one to defend Jets fans when the pundits say the schedule is so easy, because you can only beat who you play. But still, that 4-3 mark is an aberration, the Jets are still a year or two away. Give props to Eric Mangini though, what a nice turnaround he’s putting together after last year’s disaster.
3) The Cardinals outdid themselves last week in losing at Oakland…Walter Payton, Joe Montana and Dick Butkus couldn’t save this team.
4) I jumped the gun on the whole “Chargers are the best team in the NFL” assessment. I apologize to the fans in Chicago and Indianapolis.
5) Seattle is in big time trouble after losing Shaun Alexander and now Hasselbeck. Watch out for my preseason NFC West pick Rams to try to sneak under the radar to a division title.
GAMES OF THE WEEKIndianapolis (6-0) +2.5 at Denver (5-1): Definitely a potential AFC Championship preview right here, folks. This is a statement game for Jake Plummer-the Broncos fans are calling for his head, even though his backup is a rookie and Plummer has Denver at 5-1. I do think this is Indy’s year, but I always stay away from Peyton in the cold on the road. Pick: Broncos
Baltimore (4-2) +2 at New Orleans (5-1): New Orleans went from good story to legitimate contender about two weeks ago. But still, Drew Brees hasn’t seen Baltimore’s defense yet. The Saints are due for a letdown. Pick: Ravens
Atlanta (4-2) +4.5 at Cincinnati (4-2): The Bengals quit their “Bungals” impression last week against the Panthers. Mike Vick led the Falcons to an impressive win last week over Pittsburgh, but this one has classic “Vick letdown status” all over it. Pick: Bengals
THE RESTArizona (1-6) +3.5 at Green Bay (2-4): I’ve already told you my opinion of the Cardinals more than enough. Brett Favre is playing his guts out despite having hardly anything to work with. Pick: Packers
Houston (2-4) +3 at Tennessee (1-5): Has anybody noticed how well David Carr has played this year? The Texans demolished Jacksonville last week. Let’s see if they can make it two for the first time in…forever. Pick: Texans
Jacksonville (3-3) +6 at Philadelphia (4-3): I’m terrified to pick the Eagles right now. They just keep inventing ways to lose games in the fourth quarter. Still though, Jacksonville got killed by Houston last week and has played awful since a strong start. I’m giving the Eagles a big leap of faith here…I’ll probably regret it. Pick: Eagles
Seattle (4-2) +6 at Kansas City (3-3): When you looked at this one a few weeks ago, you’d think it’d be a shootout between Trent Green and Hasselbeck. But injuries will make it a battle of the backups, and Damon Huard has played great, while I don’t know the first thing about Seneca Wallace. Pick: Chiefs
Tampa Bay (2-4) +9 at N.Y. Giants (4-2): The Bucs won their version of the Super Bowl last week…it’s back to normal this week for Gruden’s bunch. Pick: Giants
St. Louis (4-2) +9 at San Diego (4-2): A lot of questions are swirling around the Chargers after last week’s loss to Kansas City and the subsequent steroid suspension of Shawne Merriman. The Rams can stick with San Diego offensively. Pick: Rams
N.Y. Jets (4-3) +1.5 at Cleveland (1-5): This is what I’m talking about when it comes to the Jets. They are 4-3 and still are underdogs to a putrid Cleveland team. Cleveland is bad, but they play hard, and I think Jets fans are overlooking this one. Pick: Browns
Pittsburgh (2-4) -9 at Oakland (1-5): Just what the doctor ordered for a banged up Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers: a date in Oakland. The Raiders got their one win out of the way last week, now Randy Moss, Warren Sapp and co. can now stop trying. Pick: Steelers
Dallas (3-3) +5 at Carolina (4-3): Tony Romo’s first NFL start comes at Carolina against a Panther team that is furious it lost a game it probably should have won in Cincinnati. What’s that sound? Sounds like silence coming from every Dallas fan in the country. Pick: Panthers
New England (5-1) -2 at Minnesota (4-2): Brad Childress has done an outstanding job in his first year in Minnesota. This one should be a good one. Pick: Vikings
San Fran (2-4) +16.5 at Chicago (6-0): Pick: Bears
