Baseball
There are only three weeks until the CAA Tournament, and many teams are making late-season runs. Northeastern is heading upward in the conference standings to third place. Leading the way for the Huskies was CAA Player of the Week Chris Emanuele. The senior outfielder batted .600 with two homers, eight runs scored and nine RBI as Northeastern went 3-1 last week. Other weekly award winners include Co-CAA Pitcher of the Week John Leonard of VCU and CAA Rookie of the Week Kurt Houck of James Madison (JMU).
Softball
Drexel’s Ashlee Veilleux was named the CAA Player of the Week for the final week of the regular season. The freshman collected the honor after hitting .467 and earning a 2-1 record on the mound for the Dragons. The rookie tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout over CAA foe Hofstra in nine innings. Veilleux also led off in the ninth with a double and came into score the go-ahead run. Ali Bryan of George Mason and Elizabeth Hyman of Georgia State shared the CAA Pitcher of the Week honors.
The field is set for the CAA Tournament. Top-seeded Georgia State will be playing No. 4 Delaware and No. 2 Hofstra will be playing No. 3 Wilmington. The tournament starts Thursday at Bob Heck field in Atlanta and the champion will be crowned on Saturday.
Swimming and Diving
George Mason junior Tom Koucheravy was named the CAA Men’s Swimmer of the Year for the second straight season, while UNC-W senior Dean Berman also repeated as CAA Men’s Diver of the Year. Koucheravy and Berman each took first place in the CAA Championship and both qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Also receiving awards were JMU’s Russell Smyth (Rookie of the Year, swimming) and Drexel’s Jacob Roberson (Rookie of the Year, diving). Wilmington’s Dave Allen was voted men’s swimming Coach of the Year, while Marc Ellington, also of Wilmington, was selected as men’s diving Coach of the Year.
On the women’s side, Davidson senior Megan Hollar was named 2006 CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Year, while Drexel freshman Kate Hynes was selected CAA Diver and Rookie Diver of the Year. Hollar won the CAA Championship while breaking a school record in the 100-breast stroke in a time of 1:03:30.
