WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
James Madison University (JMU) upset No. 1 Old Dominion (ODU) 75-68 in their regular season finale. Leslie Dickinson led all scorers with 18 points. The CAA announced the pairings for the conference’s 2006 Women’s Basketball Championship. ODU, JMU, Delaware and the Pride all get first-round byes as they finished one through four respectively.
BASEBALL
JMU had a big week, completing a three game sweep of Fairfield University. Leading the way for JMU was sophomore outfielder Kellen Kulbacki, who received the CAA Player of the Week Award. He batted .600 with 3 homers, 2 doubles, 7 runs scored and 11 RBI. Georgia State pitcher Romas Hicks was named CAA Pitcher of the Week, scattering six hits over seven shutout innings in a win against UNC Asheville, 8-0. The right-hander struck out 10 while just walking two. Robbie Nickle of William & Mary was named CAA Rookie of the Week, after batting .778 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored in four games, including a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI in a 6-3 victory at Norfolk State.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Drexel moved to 2-0 on the young season as they defeated Lehigh 18-7. Junior midfielder Kerry Kelly tallied four assists, and took over as the Drexel’s all-time assist leader. Attackers Emily Hoesch and Jessica Bill each scored five times each. Also, JMU remained undefeated as they beat Yale 10-9. Senior Brooke McKenzie scored four goals to pace the No. 19 Dukes.
SOFTBALL
First place UNC-Wilmington participated in the Charleston Southern Tournament last week. The Seahawks went 3-2, losing to the eventual tournament champion Iowa State 3-2. They also grabbed wins against St. Bonaventure, Western Carolina and Central Connecticut State, amassing an overall record of 9-10.
