WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Old Dominion (ODU) clinched the top seed in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament, posting a flawless 16-0 conference record. James Madison is in position to grab the second seed in the tournament, as the Dukes have won their past two games. Leading the way for JMU is junior center Meredith Alexis, who was named CAA Player of the Week, averaging 25 points per game and 14.5 rebounds per game last week. UNC Wilmington freshman forward Sahsha Taylor was awarded the CAA Women’s Rookie of the Week award for the fifth time this season, as she averaged 19 points and eight rebounds per game last week.
BASEBALL
UNC-Wilmington and ODU have started out this season on fire. UNC-Wilmington improved to 6-1 this season as it took two out three from Wake Forest. Leading the way for the Seahawks was CAA Player of the Week John Raynor. The senior outfielder batted .615 in the series with four runs scored. ODU is right behind the Seahawks with an 8-2 record. The Monarchs took two out of three from Navy and they also handed Virginia its first loss this season. ODU senior right-hander Kevin Gunter was named CAA Pitcher of the Week as he scattered seven hits through nine innings over Virginia.
MEN’S/WOMEN’S GOLF
The Georgia State men’s golf team finished fourth at the 29th Annual Sun Trust Gator Invitational last week. The No. 9 ranked Panthers shot a final round score of 297 to end with an 875 total at the par-70, 6,701-yard University Golf Course. No. 5 University of Florida won the title holding off Tulsa by six strokes.
The women’s golf team finished tied for third at the 28th Annual Pat Bradley Championship. The Lady Panthers shot a third round score of 299 to end with a three-round total of 908 at the par-73, 5,957-yard Miccosukee Golf & Country Club. Augusta State finished first, followed by BYU in the 20-team event.
