Marguerite Amelia Malone, an avid University supporter who donated more than $15,000, died Jan. 29 at Saratoga Hospital in upstate Saratoga Springs at the age of 84.
Known as Amelia by friends, Malone was a major asset to the University community.
“Through her long-time commitment and support for the University, Mrs. Malone has left an enduring legacy that will benefit many future generations of Hofstra students,” Margaret Shields, executive director for alumni relations, said. “We have lost a wonderful friend and devoted member of the Hofstra family.”
Malone chaired and co-created Save Our Scholarship Committee with her husband, Raymond Malone, who was an employee at the Plant Department.
The couple’s activism also created the Raymond and Amelia Malone Endowed Scholarship.
As a result of their work, both Amelia and Raymond received the Honorary Alumni of the Year Award in 1992.
“It conveys a depth of involvement and loyalty to the community,” Shields said.
Shields said Malone and her husband took their alumni status to heart, becoming part of the “Hofstra family” and attending University sporting and theater events.
“They were loyal fans of Hofstra sports,” she added. “They even followed the team to away games.”
Malone and her husband were married almost 60 years when he passed in 2002.
She is survived by her four children – Margaret V. Malone, a University Law alumna, Stephen Malone, Raymond Malone Jr. and Mary Ellen Reese – and seven grandchildren.
According to Newsday, Malone also served as chairwoman for the Law School’s Parents’ Committee and the first Parents’ Phonathon fundraising effort.
Additionally, she was a member of the Law School Development Committee and conducted the first open house for parents.
