The Student Government Association passed legislation Tuesday creating a new organization designed to oversee business clubs. The newly formed Student Business Organization Board (SBOB) aims to delegate the business-affiliated clubs on campus.
SGA is normally the main organization to which clubs have to report. Business clubs now have the option of transferring to SBOB for delegation and new clubs can choose to form under either SGA or SBOB.
Senators were concerned that SBOB would create more barriers for business clubs to overcome, and the resolution might remove power from SGA to preside over these clubs. However, SBOB is intended to lesson the bureaucracy associated with club interaction by focusing the process.
“I’m fully in favor of the SBOB, because like I said, I think it’s a more focused bureaucracy” said senator Robin Doublebower. “As opposed to all the separate clubs having to come through us, they can come through SBOB. And we don’t have to worry as much about them, and we still have as tight of a control on the appropriations as we used to. So, all in all I think it’s a really good idea, and I wish more clubs would amalgamate into umbrella organizations.”
SBOB is modeled after the Inter-Fraternity Sorority Council (IFSC), which presides over the numerous Greek organizations. Like the IFSC, SGA would still maintain authority over SBOB.
“I think its great. It’s actually going to be really helpful, and I’m really happy that it’s modeled off the IFSC,” said SGA president Brent Weitzberg. “The IFSC is really productive, and they do a lot to help.”
SBOB will be affiliated with and will receive additional funding from the Zarb School of Business. This association is intended to give business clubs more respectability outside of the Univesrity. The SBOB will allow the business clubs to have the ability to be more of a collective group.
