The article that appeared in last week’s issue of The Chronicle regarding Planned Parenthood of Nassau County’s (PPNC) Open House had incorrect information written and I feel obligated to set the record straight.
Planned Parenthood’s Open House was organized to educate students about the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, Human Papilloma Virus, breast cancer, HIV and unintended pregnancies. I wish the article had led with the relevant information about the program of the Open House, which hosted 82 students, and the essential health care services that PPNC provides rather than focusing on the opinions of a small group of anti-choice protestors that want to shut down PPNC’s Health Center.
In the article, a representative from AAA Pregnancy Options was quoted as saying AAA offers “alternatives for young mothers-to-be.” I find it necessary to point out that at AAA, as well as other Pregnancy Crisis Centers, counseling is biased regarding options for women dealing with an unintended pregnancy.
On the other hand, at PPNC, the counselors are trained to present “all options” counseling. PPNC’s counselors explain all of the options to the patient in an unbiased way, never leading a woman towards a particular decision regarding her pregnancy.
Prevention of unintended pregnancy is one of PPNC’s primary goals. Unfortunately, the article in last week’s Chronicle took the focus off the successful and important PPNC Open House—where college students came to learn about how to make safe and healthy life decisions.
