Head coach Abby Morgan often talks about her “big three”. For the past four years, the big three she speaks of have led Hofstra women’s lacrosse to the brink of conference championships and to a nationally recognized status. One section of the trio is senior attacker Kim Hillier.
Hillier saw her 41-game point scoring streak come to an end this week against New Hampshire. The Wildcats were no doubt onto Hillier’s scoring capabilities as they surrounded her with stifling defense the entire 60 minutes and didn’t allow her to get a shot off.
The streak dates back to 2005, Hillier’s sophomore season and continued until Wednesday, seven games into her senior season.
Morgan recalled a great Hillier moment in her sophomore season against Old Dominion. Hofstra was down a goal with 12 seconds left, and Hillier got the draw control, ran down the field taking on seven people and scored. Hofstra won the game in overtime.
“That’s the kind of thing that Kim can do,” Morgan said. “She’s so talented and so determined to win. She’s really got a no lose attitude, and when you need her she will get the job done, what more could you ask for?”
The streak exemplifies Hillier’s consistent performance throughout her career, and being a player that the team can rely on is a rare trait. Morgan said that Hillier has that trait, and it’s something you can’t teach that helps the team in so many ways.
“She’s the kind of player that has no conscience,” Morgan said. “When she needs to score, she’ll score. And when the team needs her to put them on her back, she’ll do it.”
On Wednesday the Pride showcased its other offensive weapons, making it clear to other teams that along with Hillier, there are a bunch of other Hofstra jerseys that will get it done.
So while the impressive streak came to an end, Hofstra came away with the victory, and Hillier surely has her eyes on another streak and that ever-elusive CAA championship.
