For the second time in as many games, Hofstra’s men’s soccer team used their opponent’s misstep at an inopportune time to pull out a surprise conference win, victory coming this occasion against rival George Mason. This time, it was not superstar Brett Carrington, but instead unsung hero-junior midfielder Rory McShea-that put the ball in the back of the net-off of his own rebound-with a scant six minutes left in regulation.
The result was especially surprising because of how badly the Pride seemed to be outplayed by their opponents, surrendering almost twice as many shots as they were able to get off themselves, with a stunning fifteen shots being blasted in the second half by the Patriots.
Thankfully for the Pride, they were saved-pardon the pun-by the superlative play of freshman goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone, who succeeded in stopping an astonishing nine shots on goal, more than double what his counterpart was confronted with.
The quality keeping, along with what seems to be a considerable amount of luck on their side, has the Pride pointed in the proper direction as they enter this weekend’s game against the Tribe of William & Mary, looking to put the Pride further up the table in hopes of garnering a berth in the end of the year CAA tournament.
Hopes are especially high considering that their opponents for Saturday lost their game this evening against CAA leader UNC-Wilmington, moving them behind the Pride in the standings for the season.
