After narrow defeats by East Carolina and Villanova at the Penn Quaker Invitational this past week, the Pride Women’s Soccer team slumped below .500 at 2-4. Despite a 1-0 first-half lead, poor weather played a factor in East Carolina’s two-goal comeback. In the loss, the Pride’s lone goal came from junior forward Erika Fuertes, and goalkeeper Krysten Farriella notched seven saves. The team returned to the field on Sunday to face the undefeated Villanova Wildcats in what would ultimately be a heartbreaker of a loss. After trailing 2-1 at halftime, the Pride remained undeterred and after tough pressure on the Wildcats, sophomore midfielder Tiffany Yovino scored her third goal of the season to tie the game up. Yovino got a hold of the ball again with a little over two minutes only to have her shot hit the crossbar. Less than a minute later with just 1:19 remaining, Villanova answered back with the game-winning goal. Despite two disappointing losses in the tournament, outstanding play earned Yovino and senior defender Jess Crankshaw All-Tournament honors. The Pride returns home to take the field against Island-rival Stony Brook today at 7 p.m. and Central Connecticut on Sunday.
