As the school year wraps up, most students are ready to welcome the summer months. With the exception of those who are Knicks and Rangers fans, they will watch basketball and hockey playoffs and then make the smooth transition to baseball, beers and barbeques. Then comes my least favorite time of the year: the time when the jackass with a dirty shirt who is still slurring from having way too many “brews with the bros” last night makes his fantasy picks.
Coming back each fall this is one of the things I dread; listening to idiots ramble on about how, “Oh, no! Rivers is injured. My team is gunna suck this week, man.” I never knew how many Hofstra students were owners of the Chargers. I feel humbled.
However, there are a couple things to look forward to next fall. Not to get ahead of myself, but as a fan, I hope next year the basketball team will make it to the dance or that the football team won’t take such a physical smack down.
Starting with fall 2009, Hofstra is the land of promise.
The new athletic web site. Technically it was launched this month, but I’m certain not all the students have seen it yet. Even if Hofstra fails to compete on the field, it can always hold its own on the World Wide Web.
The signing of 17 freshmen to the football team.
Last season’s football team was not untalented or under-coached, but they basically got dropkicked across James M. Shuart Stadium. This class will add depth, and hopefully, as most of the upperclassmen have healed, the team record will improve.
Kareem Huggins gets signed to Tampa Bay.
Okay, so its na’ve to think he’ll break out like Marques Colston did in ’06, but Hofstra fans can only hope he gets a shot at the NFL. He’s in good company, too. For all those Buccaneer fans out there (or anyone who watches football) Tampa Bay is coached by former Pride athlete, Raheem Morris, and the organization also signed Huggins’ former teammate Kyle Arrington back in January.
The USL team coming to Hofstra.
For all you soccer fans out there your long-awaited dream has finally come true. A professional soccer team at Hofstra. Sure, it may conflict with the school’s sports in season, but its another chance for the Pride to get some good l’ PR. Hofstra logos all around!
Bruce Springsteen singing the national anthem at football’s season home-opener.
I’m kidding, but if Hofstra can get a soccer team here, who says they can’t get the Boss.
