This past year, Lawrence F. Jindra, MD, of Floral Park Ophthalmology and Chief of Ophthalmology at Winthrop University Hospital has had the assistance of Joseph Donnelly in conducting research on Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT). SLT is a laser procedure performed on patients with glaucoma.
Donnelly will graduate from the University in May with a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry. He is the first author on four different studies submitted to various ophthalmology associations this past year.
His first submission was to the American Glaucoma Society, and the topic is “Effect of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty on Diurnal Fluctuations of Intraocular Pressure in Patients Receiving Primary and Secondary Therapy.” A poster presentation on this topic will be given at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Diego, Calif., on March 6.
At the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, Donnelly will speak on the topic, “The Effect of Age on Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty as Primary Therapy.” The annual conference will be held in National Harbor, Md., on April 3.
The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery also accepted a submission titled, “Five Year Cumulative Experience of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty as Repeat Therapy in Patients with Glaucoma.” Donnelly is the principal author on this topic and an online poster presentation will be on display at their Annual Symposium at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, Calif., on April 4.
The last topic, which was very recently accepted by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the world’s most prestigious vision research meeting, is titled “Five Year Experience of Effect of Race on Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty as Therapy in Patients with Glaucoma.” Donnelly is the first author, and it will be presented at the ARVO 2009 Annual Meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on May 3.
Donnelly worked very hard on this research and Dr. Jindra has given him a great opportunity to further his education and personal achievements.
