Hofstra's wins streak shatters in OT at Boston

By PJ Potter – STAFF WRITER  The five-game winning streak by the Hofstra women's soccer team was snapped on Sunday after a 2-1 overtime loss to Boston University.

The Terriers battled for their first win of the season, improving to 1-4-2. Hofstra’s record dropped to 5-3.

Freshman Dorrie Varley-Barrett started the scoring for Boston to record her first career goal in the 26th minute, which would be the only tally for both teams in the opening half.

The Pride outshot Boston in the half 8-5 despite not finding the back of the net. Hofstra midfielder Emily Agudelo hit the post in the 37th minute, highlighting the team’s inability to score.

Midfielder Jill Mulholland knotted the score 1-1 with an unassisted goal from just inside the box in the 60th minute, her third score this year. Hofstra totaled 11 shots in the second half as opposed to Boston’s three strikes.

Fans in attendance at Nickerson Field got to watch extra soccer, since 90 minutes passed and neither team was determined a winner.

The Pride was inches from winning the match on a shot from Jenn Buoncore that crashed off the post with just 2:05 into overtime.

A few minutes later, Clare Pleuler’s kick from 25 yards out zipped by a diving Friederike Mehring into the top left corner, ending the game with a Terrier victory.

Hofstra finished with five shots on goal and 21 overall. Boston accounted for seven on target and ten in total.

Goalkeeper Alyssa Parisi completed the game with four saves for the Terriers while Mehring stopped five.

Hofstra hosts Fordham on Sunday, September 20 starting at 2:00 p.m.
