On Friday, senior field hockey stars Claudia Marin-Samper and Stella Schoen were both able to show off their stellar offensive presence, despite dropping a close one to Northeastern University by a 3-2 score. The Huskies and Pride were all notched up at 2-2 heading into the half, but Natalie Stewart of Northeastern scored her second goal of the game early in the second half to give the Huskies the lead and ultimately the win that improves the Huskies’ record to 7-7 on the season.
As for Hofstra, this team is still poised to make some postseason tournament noise. With the third best overall record in the conference, as well as a roster filled with experienced and resilient players, there is no reason to not see Hofstra having a legitimate chance for the regular season and the postseason conference title.
Marin-Samper continues to dazzle the audience, as her spins and evasions against the Huskies were like something out of a video game. Yet, she backed up that flash by scoring her 15th goal of the year on a wonderful passing shot that hit the top right shelf of the net.
Marin-Samper is also in second place in the conference for total goals, and total points on the year with 15 and 40, respectively.
After Northeastern jumped out to an early 2-0 lead within the first 20 minutes of the game, it was Marin-Samper and then Stella Schoen who provided the two that equalized it before the half ended.
For Schoen, the goal was her 11th on the year, and if she stays on the pace she has been on, this final year could be her most productive. Her career-high 17 goals, seven assists, and 41 points last season could all be broken within these final four games for the Pride.
Another senior who came through for the Pride was none other than Colby Hussong, who provided the assists on both Hofstra goals.
Hussong has only scored one goal compared to the six she had last year, but with four games left, she has already tied her career-best seven assists from last year.
The Pride continues the remainder of its season with a trip to Pennsylvania to take on Drexel University and Saint Joseph’s University before the final two games, both home, against James Madison University and the College of William and Mary.
