McCoy signs deal with San Diego Padres

Hofstra University baseball outfielder Alex McCoy announced he signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, July 17, just one day after the culmination of the 2024 MLB Draft. While the deal is official, a physical signing is still pending.

As a Baltimore native, McCoy transferred to Hofstra for his senior year following two seasons at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. During his lone season with the Pride, McCoy batted .306 with a .896 OPS. He had 68 hits, 11 home runs and a .509 slugging percentage, leading the Pride in the latter two statistics, along with 12 doubles and 40 runs scored.

McCoy is the 12th MLB free agent signee in Hofstra baseball history, one year after 2023 captain Kevin Bruggeman signed with the Los Angeles Angels. Bruggeman is currently playing for the Tri-City Dust Devils in High-A ball.

“[McCoy] put in a lot of hard work to prepare for this moment, and we wish him all the best in his professional career,” said Hofstra baseball head coach Frank Catalanotto. “The Padres are getting a special player.”
