The fifth annual Friends of Max Kolb Telethon raised approximately $2,200 for the Max Benjamin Kolb Endowed Scholarship.
“Our goal was $2,000, so we’re ecstatic,” Suzie Rosenthal, co-producer of the event, said.
Held in Dempster Hall on April 30, the show was sponsored by the Audio, Visual, Film Department and broadcast on HTV.
All proceeds went to the scholarship, which was established in the memory of Max Kolb through a collaboration with Kolb’s mother and the University. The cash grant is awarded to an undergraduate student who is a film studies or production major.
Kolb, 21, was a University undergraduate who was stabbed to death five years ago by a dorm-mate. Shaun Alexander was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison in conjunction with Kolb’s death.
The telethon featured 27 live performances and 10 packages and movies, Rosenthal, a senior at the University said. Performances ranged from a professional jazz piano player, acoustic bands, twirlers and a rap artist.
“It was really a nice mix,” she added. “We had a really talented group this year.”
Members of the telethon’s staff had been planning the 50s-themed showcase since the beginning of the spring semester. The set included two stages painted in a checkerboard pattern and giant cutouts of a jukebox and television.
“It came out so great,” Rosenthal said. “It was unbelievable.”
