As an EMT in the Uniondale Fire Department, I know all about decontaminating ambulances and infection control. The University’s new methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus precaution posters placed in the bathrooms are great; they clearly state to wash your hands with soap. It bothers me that the University acknowledges that one should use soap to wash his or her hands, but soap is not supplied in the bathrooms of the residence towers. Now, they do provide some form of sanitizer, but that does not remove the dirt on your hands. There is a reason why surgeons use soap while scrubbing up for an operation and not just a cheap version of Purell. How hard is it to replace the cartridges with soap? Plainly put: soap does a better job at infection control.
