“See, it’s all in the shoes,” Dior says as he points to my heels. “Shoe game-that’s where it all starts.”
Dior stands correctly in his red Vans. It is the shoes, a piece of clothing that is often overlooked and treated as a shoddy accessory to the sole purpose of walking, that are actually the fundamental steps to a well-put together outfit.
This is what Dior understands-accessories are the outfit itself.
When I ask Dior which people are the influences behind his randomly pieced accessories that fit together so well, he shrugs, “No one.”
But I do a double take; there must be some type of influence behind his children’s Oshkosh hat countered by a vintage leather jacket.
I find out that Dior and his style do not aimlessly walk to the beat of different drums; he tells me his clothing stems from the musical influences of “old hip-hop and the early New York break dancing scene.”
“And where do you find these clothes?” I ask him.
“It’s vintage stuff. Some of it is new.” Dior smiles, “Plus you never know what you are going to find in your parents’ closet. What was cool yesterday, can be even more unique and stepped up today.”
“So I have one last question for you, do you have any tips?”
“Just don’t be afraid to step outside of the box, if you can pull it, you can wear it. But it all starts with the sneakers,” Dior tells me as he ties his laces.
I ask Dior to stand up; I want to take one last photograph of his outfit. Wearing his gold chain, bright blue Snoopy shirt, and oversized sunglasses – he walks toward me, to the rhythm of a Brooklyn B-boy who wears the shoes of vintage hip hop, but all in the swagger of himself, Dior.
“Your shoes look good; it is what makes your outfit,” Dior tells me as I shoot the last photograph. I put my best foot forward, “Thanks,” I laugh, “I like yours too Dior; they were the first things I noticed about you.”
