Hofstra University’s Model United Nations team has returned, and the members of the club are gearing up for their first competition from April 5-9 where they will compete against various schools from all over the country.
Many of you probably do not remember, but there was a time when Hofstra University sponsored a Model U.N. team of its own, until its mysterious disappearance from the competition in the 1990s. Today, Hofstra students have revived the dormant club and are welcoming new members who are interested in learning about and competing in Model U.N. competitions.
It is thanks to the passion of its current members and the help of encouraging faculty that this revitalized club has emerged once again. The mixture of passionate students and supportive faculty has abetted the efforts of this student-run club.
As a warm up, the club will be competing at the National Model United Nations Competition in New York City on April 5-9, with opening and closing ceremonies at the U.N. building.
This year, the team will be representing The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, a small country located above Greece that has only been around for about 18 years. It is through this competition that Hofstra’s delegates have the opportunity to learn more about what is happening in the world in regions that the average person never would have considered.
At the competition, delegates will represent Macedonian policy in committees that include Nuclear Disarmament and the Climate Change of Economics, just to name a few. Delegates will debate these policies with schools from all over the world. With 50 percent of the competitors from outside the U.S., this will be a unique opportunity to explore new countries without having to leave the comfort of New York.
