Millions of Americans read magazines, but only a select few are talented enough to get their stories or graphics on the glossy pages. Some students are already getting in the industry’s creative process through Ed2010, the university’s magazine club. The name ‘Ed2010′ is more well-known as a website for aspiring journalists.
“Ed2010 the website has message boards, articles about how to ace an interview and build a resume, and a section
for whisper jobs available inNew York,” said sophomore member and print journalism major Chelsea Tirrell. Both of Tirrell’s current freelance internships were found through the Ed2010 website.
“Ed2010 is trying to get more magazine professionals to come give advice to the members and describe the magazine industry, what you can do to get in, as well as tutorials on the web and fashion,” said sophomore member and print journalism major Ashley Melfi. Ed2010 will be active this year planning several events for the upcoming semester and beyond.
“They’re putting together an alumni night where Hofstra alumni who work in the magazine industry come in and advise students,” said journalism professor and adviser for Ed2010 Carol Fletcher. “In addition, we’re doing a ‘Future of Magazine’ night where people from Hearst, Amercian Express Publishing, and many other companies will talk about the next step in the magazine world.” Through this event, Ed2010 will begin to discuss digital trends in magazines.
“Although Ed2010 focuses on mainly on magazine opportunities, not all members are necessarily aspiring to be a part of one specific industry. “I don’t want to write for a magazine, but I am very interested in sports journalism,” said Melfi.
Whether a student is looking to work specifically in magazines or simply has a high interest in writing, Ed2010’s members feel the club is a great place to begin.
“It’s a really great opportunity to network and ask everything from the whole layout of the magazine industry to what you should you wear on your job interview for Seventeen tomorrow, and everything in between.” said Fletcher.
