By Mary Ashlyn Moore, Graphic Designer
PSYCH! Last week was not the final issue of the spring semester.
In all reality, I, the graphic designer, shouldn’t be writing the last Editorial — I should be throwing together the Photo-Spread of 2010: A Year In Review. The honor should’ve gone to David Gordon, who tackled the jobs of Managing Editor and Editor-In-Chief of Pulse Magazine, and got accepted to Brooklyn College Graduate School for theater criticism. So, read last week’s editorial, but if it has to be my turn…
Somehow, our incredible staff pulled together a few newsworthy spreads the past few days, so here goes my first thanks to Entertainment Unlimited for Music Fest last weekend (even though I’d never heard of any of the performers); the “typical” Hofstra girls and boys for continuing to smoke weed, steal and say dumb sh*t out loud so we could have Public Safety Briefs and an “Overheard at Hofstra” section.
I’ve only been at Hofstra for a year and a half – to make that happen I had to cram in 72 credit hours in three semesters, plus summer and winter sessions. I guess it’s fair to say that I learned how to manage my time, how to be a work-a-holic and accept Friday nights in Hammer Lab (thanks Dani for being a nerd with me!). In all honesty, there were probably a lot of college things I missed out on – no McHebes (so far) and no toga parties; I never found my way to the roof of the Student Center or Dempster. If I did go to a party – my name is not Trisha, I don’t go to Harvard and sorry that you might be missing some Christmas decorations and/or cake mix.
With that, I want to thank The Chronicle for being a bad influence in the BEST way possible -– you all reminded me not to take life too seriously, made me laugh and always pushed me to make the most out photographs and design. The paper is under GREAT direction and I’m kind of jealous that I won’t be a part of the team when it flourishes and conquers every other university’s news outlet.
I want to thank a few people: Prof. Carol Fletcher for advising my college career and guiding me through magazine production. I hope Spring 2010’s Pulse will be a model for many more semesters, until a real Graphic Design major figures out that the School of Comm. really is useful.
Prof. Dan Van B for helping me realize that combining my passion for journalism and art isn’t crazy.
My graphic design professors, Shin and Roxas, for convincing me that my work sucked in the beginning; to always “DO MORE,” until I deserved my “A” in the end – seriously, it made me work my ass off. Thanks, non-journalism friends, for at least trying to understand where my time goes.
Thanks New York, for being competitive, unpredictable, entertaining, a home for the best magazines, movies and art – anything and everything BUT the south. I’m ready for you now.
