The Student Government Association’s Rules Committee and Academic Affairs Committee met Monday, Feb. 28 to review recent developments at The University and to introduce new clubs for consideration. Three out of four clubs became official Tuesday at the SGA meeting.
SGA passed three clubs that had been passed in the Rules Committee, with the exception of NY Nightlife Metro due to liability concerns. All legislation was tabled for next week because the Hofstra Senate lost its quorum after senators left early.
In the Rules Committee, four club proposals were given the green light to present before SGA for official consideration. Hofstra Automotive Enthusiasts Club, Hofstra for Edeyo (Edeyo is a Haitian support foundation), American Choral Directors’ Association and NY Nightlife Network were all approved by the Rules Committee. Before the committee adjourned, they discussed a return to SGA’s absence policy.
Next, the Academic Affairs Committee heard conclusions from Hofstra’s first discussion on Academic Integrity, which also brought its results to Dean Warren Frisina’s Task Force. The committee concluded that students could benefit from a clear definition of what constitutes plagiarism and self-plagiarism.
The Academic Affairs Committee also discussed renovations to Axinn Library’s second floor lounge area, which would include more moveable furniture as well as better table and couch accommodations for individual and group student projects.
In addition, the Provost Scholar Reception was announced for April 1st at 2 p.m. in the University Club and PridePrint said they would work with Computing Services to offer friendlier use of their printers in the Netherlands.
SGA President James Wells announced that Assistant Director Joseph Gebbie is looking for six to eight SGA members to contribute to a Student Advisory Board regarding future improvements for The Career Center. The Student Advisory Board would assist with Fall 2011 programming and would offer feedback on The Career Center so far.
