Gone are the days when girls and boys turned to mittens and thermals to keep warm from harsh winter weather. A majority of young women and men resort to using a different accessory to protect themselves on these chilly and frosty days.
Various animal knit hats have been spotted on the Hofstra campus since winter’s eager arrival. Arguably, these knit hats have been made popular by celebrities that are known for their quirky and fun fashion style. Singer, Katy Perry, and Victoria’s Secret model, Miranda Kerr, have been photographed in these comfortable critter caps. Perry opts for an innocently eye-catching panda beanie, while Kerr prefers a fur duck trapper—the duck’s legs serve as side straps for a tight and comfortable fit. There are many faux fur trapper hats that offer extra protection by providing straps on either side, as well as popular beanie hats that provide a casually cute look. Regardless of the style chosen, every individual’s need is covered. “I think they’re adorable! I have a penguin hat, and I totally support people wearing them,” says Television Production major, Erica Schwaninger.
Choose your personal favorite from a variety of animal hats—ranging from the popular bunny hat to a more modern wolf hat. Pair your adorable hat with old-school knit mittens and confront the cold weather. Sophomore Television Production major, Debra McCullaugh, shares her input on this latest craze: “I’ve always really liked pandas, and when I found out they made panda hats, I had to have one. [My hat] makes me feel warm and cute!”
Will these knit animal hats continue to thrive through next fall, or will they undergo permanent hibernation? “I don’t like to wear animal hats. They’re not my style; I think those hats look ridiculous on me, but they look cute on girls. I’ve seen a lot of girls wear them this year,” said Mechanical Engineering major, Anuraj George.
