AWARDS AND MILESTONES
Pride volleyball coach Fran Kalafer recently was named the University’s 2004 Honorary Alumna of the Year, which is given out each year in recognition of outstanding service to the school or the Alumni Organization.
“I am flattered and pleased to be chosen as the [University’s] Honorary Alumna of the Year,” Kalafer said. “My career at [the University] has defined who I am and what I do. I share this award with all my 28 volleyball and tennis teams. It has been my privilege to know and work with each of these incredible women.”
Kalafer added the award to a long list of accomplishments. Last weekend she picked up career victories 580 and 581, which is good for ninth on the all time Division-I list.
CAA ROUNDUP
Towson University, the defending Colonial Athletic Association regular season champions, was a unanimous selection to retain its title in the 2004 season in a recent poll conducted by the league’s coaches.
The Tigers received all seven first-place votes, with the Pride coming in second. James Madison University, George Mason University, the University of Delaware, the College of William & Mary, Virginia Commonwealth University, and UNC-Wilmington followed the two teams.
Last season, the Pride upset Towson in the first round of the CAA championships before losing in the finals to George Mason University.
DID YOU KNOW…
The Pride is the last team in the nation to shut out an opponent. It beat the University of Maine, 15-0, 15-0, 15-0, on Oct. 30, 1999.
The 1999 season was the second to last season of sideout scoring, which allowed teams to only score on their serves. The NCAA decided to switch to rally scoring in all five games prior to the 2001 season, allowing teams to score anytime.
